Introducing new dog to a cat?

I'm thinking of getting a new dachshund puppy, but I'm afraid that my cat current 2 yr old cat wouldn't get used to the new dog. Would it be unfair for the cat if I bring the dog home? And how do I introduce the two of them to each other without them fighting? And would a dachshund be friendly towards my cat, or should I try another breed?
