What kind of pet should I get?

Well I am currently looking for a pet. All I have right now is a fish, and they are really stupid....I actually want something to take care of you know? I am thinking about getting a hamster, but I have no idea what one to pick out. They have different kinds, so I am not really sure what one is best for me. I want a pet that would let me pick it up and play with it or something, but it has to be small. I can't have a dog or a cat.... :/ My friends told me that a rat would be a good pet, but I really hate rat tails so I'm thinking that I shouldn't get one....But I just don't know. Anyway the real question here is what pet should I get, please explain why I should get it
